Project Brief & Key Features:

KBK was appointed by the South African National Road Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) for the detailed design and the construction supervision of the N1 bypass at Musina.  The construction of the N1 bypass would improve mobility and travel time around Musina.

The project required the design and construction supervision of 8 km of new highway, 3 major culverts and 5 multi-span bridges.  The structures department in KBK was approached by the transportation department to carry out the design of the structures.

The culverts consisted of cast in-situ reinforced concrete box type structures with splayed wing walls.

The bridges consisted of the following:

  • 2 span, reinforced concrete, solid slab type bridge with wall type piers, cantilever type abutments, and splayed wing walls;
  • 6 span, reinforced concrete, twin-spine type bridge with column type piers, spill through abutments, and ear-walls;
  • Two, 4 span, post tensioned, twin-spine with circular void formers type deck, column type piers, spill through abutments, and ear-walls;
  • 2 span, post tensioned, twin-spine voided box type deck with multiple column type piers, cantilever type abutments, and straight return walls. This structure was of architectural design and is a feature bridge. Aug 20
