Project Brief & Key Features: 

KBK was appointed by the N3TC for the detailed design and construction supervision of the upgrade of approximately 90 km on the N3.  This included the addition of paved shoulders which resulted in the requirement for all the bridges along the route to be widened.

The bridges widened along the route included the following:

• Five, single span, simply supported bridge deck that was widened by means of precast, pre-tensioned, special U-beams with a cast in-situ top slab;
• One, 4 span, simply supported bridge deck that was widened be means of precast, pre-tensioned, SY beams with a cast in-situ top slab; and
• One, 4 span, continuous, reinforced concrete deck that was widened by means of a cast in-situ reinforced concrete spine type deck.

All of the bridges were widened to both sides and the widening of the bridges included all the bridge substructures.  The widened bridges provide the N3 access over various rivers and municipal roads.
