Project Brief & Key Features:
KBK was appointed by the South African National Road Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) for the design and construction supervision of the N1 Ring Road at Musina.
The project entails the construction of approximately 8.0 km of single carriageway road along a mostly greenfields alignment. In the future this carriageway will form the southbound carriageway of the divided dual cross-section.
The project also includes the following:
- Construction of 2 grade-separated interchanges of which the Nancefield Interchange Bridge is a feature bridge to architectural requirements;
- Construction of 1 river bridge, 1 overpass bridge and a combined road and rail underpass bridge crossing the RSA-ZIM railway line;
- Realignment and upgrading of several lower-order roads crossing the N1;
- Partial relocation and upgrading of the Musina Municipal Refuse Site;
- Construction of the N1 through a 13m deep cutting (max 18m) also crossing a decommissioned undermined area (Harper Copper Mine);
- Other extraordinary construction activities such as a 3m high noise barrier, relocation of large Baobab trees and 27 new low-cost houses and associated relocation of residents;
- Preparation of the roadbed or construction of fills followed by selected layers, stabilised subbase layers, crushed stone base layers and asphalt surfacing on all the new surfaced roads.
