Project Brief & Key Features: 

KBK was appointed by the South African National Road Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) for the design and construction supervision of Phase 2 of the N1 Ring Road at Polokwane. The project entails the construction of approximately 14.8 km of a 4-lane divided dual carriageway road. Approximately 4.2 km of the road length is along greenfields alignment while the remainder is aligned on existing roads that is to be strengthened and widened as required.   

The project also includes the following:

  • Reconfiguration of the R101 grade-separated interchange and construction of 2 new grade-separated par-clo interchanges;
  • Demolition of existing bridges, extension of 1 existing overpass bridge and reconstruction of 2 river bridges; and
  • Upgrading of several lower-order roads crossing the N1.
  • Preparation of the roadbed or construction of fills followed by selected layers, stabilised subbase layers, crushed stone base layers and asphalt surfacing on all the new surfaced roads.
  • Widening and strengthening of existing road pavement by means of in-situ reworking as selected layers followed by the construction of new stabilised subbase layers, crushed stone base layers and asphalt surfacing.
  • Pre-treatment (patches, crack seal and edge repairs) of certain access roads before resurfacing with asphalt.
